How many JCPenney stores are left?

  • According to JCPenney’s official website, there are “more than 650” remaining locations. We started this list when the company announced a list of 154 stores closing on June 6, 2020 in the wake of their Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in May 2020. (This was revised and is now 152 stores).
  • On June 23, 2020, it was announced another 13 stores will close.
  • On July 7, 2020, it was announced two New York stores will close, one already permanently.
  • On July 10, 2020, local press in the Pittsburgh area reported that the Monroeville, PA and Monaca, PA that were originally slated to close are now going to remain open.
  • On July 14, 2020, it was reported three Louisiana locations slated to close are now staying open: Lafayette’s Acadiana Mall location, Metairie, and Shreveport.
  • On August 5, 2020, it was announced the iconic Century III Mall location in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania would be closing.
  • On August 7, 2020, it was announced the Bay Shore, New York store would no longer be closing. 
  • Around mid-August, 2020, two separate readers noted stores that were originally slated to close that were taken off the list: Elkhart, Indiana and San Bernadino, California.
  • Post updated on August 30 to reflect upcoming closures in Plano, Texas, Charlottesville, Virginia, and Richmond, Virginia to bring our projected number to 681.
  • Post updated on December 29, to reflect upcoming closures announced on December 17, 2020 , and five Illinois store closures, one Washington state closure and one New York closure we missed.
  • Post updated on September 28 to reflect closures in Greenwood, Mississippi and Baytown, Texas.
  • List updated to reflect early 2022 closure of the location at Chesapeake Square Mall in Chesapeake, Virginia.
  • List updated to reflect closures in Eatontown, New Jersey and Johnsburg, Illinois on July 28, 2022.
  • List updated on August 31, 2022 to reflect 8 stores that were previously announced to be closed in June 2020 but then remained open: Conway, Arkansas; Douglasville, Georgia; Tampa (Westshore Plaza), Florida; Eden Prairie, Minnesota; Oswego, New York; Anderson, South Carolina; Layton, Utah; Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. We also updated to add some three previously missed closures: Garden City, Kansas; Missoula, Montana; and Glen Allen, Virginia.  
  • List updated on January 29, 2023 to reflect upcoming closures in: Elkhart, Indiana, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, and Oswego, New York.
  • List updated on February 28, 2024 to reflect closings in: Hermitage, Pennsylvania, Ukiah, California, Waterford, Connecticut, Youngstown, Ohio (Austintown Plaza). We now estimate 663 remaining stores but with 3 soon to be closing noted.
