Atlantic City, New Jersey, is an oceanside town on the Jersey shore known for its iconic boardwalk and, of course, gambling. But, in recent years, the ‘Las Vegas of the East’ has been characterized as having fallen on hard times. However, gambling and tourism is still a big moneymaker in this exciting beach town. With all of the news surrounding the struggles in the last decade, many wonder how many casinos are in Atlantic City.

2014 was a rough year for Atlantic City casinos when five out of 14 of the casinos in the city shut down (Atlantic Club, The Claridge Casino and Hotel, Revel, Showboat, and Trump Plaza). The Remaining Atlantic City casinos

Bally’s Atlantic City, 1900 Pacific Avenue.

• This casino originally opened December 29, 1979 and has 1,169 hotel rooms. It is a modern themed casino located in the midtown section right along the Boardwalk.

Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, 1 Borgata Way.

• The Borgata is the newest casino, structurally speaking, in Atlantic City, it opened July 2, 2003. The Tuscany themed casino also has the most rooms of any AC casino hotel with 2,767. It is located off boardwalk in the Marina section of Atlantic City. It is often the most profitable casino in town and usually the most expensive to stay in.

Caesars Atlantic City, 2100 Pacific Avenue.

• Caesars is one of the earliest casinos to open in Atlantic City when legal gambling made its debut in the late 1970’s. It opened on June 26, 1979. The casino is located in the Midtown section on the Boardwalk, right next to Bally’s. The Roman Empire themed hotel has 1,141 rooms. Due to some changes in corporate ownerships, the ‘Wild Wild West Casino’ section that was previously a part of Bally’s is now in the possession of Caesars as of 2020.

Golden Nugget Atlantic City, 600 Huron Avenue.

• The Golden Nugget is the smallest casino in Atlantic City in terms of the number of hotel rooms, as it only has 717 rooms total. It was originally opened on June 19, 1985 as Trump’s Castle and then rennamed Trump Marina in 1997. After a change of corporate ownership, it became known as the Golden Nugget in 2011. As its previous name implies, it is located in the Marina section of town.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, 1000 Boardwalk.

• The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City came out of the ashes of the iconic Trump Taj Mahal casino that closed in 2016. The Trump Taj Mahal opened initially with great fanfare on April 2, 1990. The Hard Rock opened in the summer of 2018 after extensive rennovations that made it a much more modern and compelling casino hotel than the previously dilapidated and dated Trump Taj Mahal. The rock and roll themed casino boasts 1,971 rooms and holds a lot of live concert events. It is located between the Resorts and Ocean casinos on the uptown part of the boardwalk.

Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City, 777 Harrah’s Boulevard.

• Harrah’s is one of the oldest Atlantic City casinos and the first to open on the Marina side of town on November 27, 1980. It has 2,587 rooms and is known for its indoor pool area located under a glassdome known as ‘The Pool at Harrah’s’. The pool area also turns into a popular nightlife experience on the weekend with ‘The Pool After Dark’ which has featured notable celebrity appreances over the years.

Ocean Casino Resort, 500 Boardwalk.

• The Ocean Casino Resort originally opened on April 2, 2012 as the Revel Hotel Casino Atlantic City with much fanfare. The building is the fourth tallest structure in Atlantic City and the second tallest casino tower in the United States. It boasts 1,399 hotel rooms and is located uptown as the northernmost casino on the Boardwalk. Plagued with a bloated budget and debt early on, the Revel Casino closed on September 2, 2014 after just two years of being open. The mammoth structure laid vacant for years and changed hands multiple times then finally reopened as Ocean on June 27, 2018. It is considered a more low-key and fancy gambling destination on the Boardwalk.

Resorts Casino, 1133 Boardwalk.

• Resorts Casino was the first casino to open in Atlantic City on May 28, 1978 after gambling became legalized via a November 1976 gaming referendum. The historic structure originally opened on July 2, 1904 as a hotel called Chalfonte-Haddon Hall. It was rebranded as Resorts in 1968. The roaring 20’s themed casino has 942 rooms and is located in the uptown end of the Boardwalk right next to the Hard Rock Casino.

Tropicana Atlantic City, 2831 Boardwalk.

• The Tropicana Casino originally opened November 26, 1981. The Old Havana themed casino boasts 2,364 rooms and is located on the downbeach end of the Boardwalk. The hotel has six different towers.
