What is the history of Suncoast Motion Picture Company?
Suncoast launched in 1986 as Paramount Pictures, a partnership between the movie studio and Musicland. At this time, purchasing VHS tapes to own was a relatively rare phenomenon as they could cost up to $100, hence the success of the movie rental business at the time. As prices began to come down, collectors began purchasing their own VHS tapes. The idea was to do what Musicland did for music but instead for movies.
The chain broke away from Paramount and became Suncoast in 1988. Under the Suncoast Motion Picture name, the company expanded throughout the 1990’s. In 2001, Musicland and its holdings such as Suncoast, Sam Goody and Media Play were purchased by Best Buy for $685 million. The purchase was largely a failure and Sun Capital Partners assumed Best Buy’s liabilities from the Musicland division in 2003. In 2006, the Musicland Group filed for bankruptcy and eventually FYE’s parent company Trans World Entertainment purchased Musicland for $104.2 million in cash and $18.1 million in assumed liabilities and maintained 170 Suncoast stores, the peak number that the chain had. In 2009, Suncoast largely disappeared after 150 of those stores were closed.
As of 2023, only three Suncoast Motion Picture Company stores remain in Beaumont, Texas, Beavercreek, Ohio, and Jacksonville, North Carolina. If you have the chance to visit one, it might be a wise move because it is very hard to tell how long these four will last.
