Brostocks has extensively covered the demise of Sears by tracking the number of stores remaining and visiting individual locations and providing video. But the Sears name and sign still hangs in over 40 states but maybe not in the way you’ll recall from your childhood. The vast majority of states have what are called Sears Hometown stores that sell goods such as home appliances, lawn and garden power equipment, tools, mattresses, fitness equipment and more.
The Sears Hometown Stores began in 1993 in predominately rural markets. In 2012, Sears Hometown spun off from Sears Holdings and became Sears Hometown & Outlet Stores (SHOS). However, by 2019 after Sears Holdings went bankrupt and emerged as the newly formed Transform Co, they bought back the Sears Hometown brand. Sears Hometown stores are primarily franchise locations independently owned and operated, but some of the stores are owned by the Transform Co company. They are significantly smaller than a standard Sears mall store.
Like the full-line Sears stores primarily in malls and large shopping centers, the Hometown stores have struggled and that has resulted in mass closures. In May 2022, it was announced nearly 100 stores were closing. With all of the closures surrounding the Sears name, you might wonder, “is there a Sears Hometown near me?” There are 172 stores remaining as of August 5, 2022. Check out the list below to see if there’s one near you.
